(per press agefcy.) WELLINGTON. June 17. It is understood that a reserve of 40.,000 acres is being made for Milford Harbor, though it is not yet formerly completed. June 18. An attempt is about being made to induce the Government not to sell the present Court House on Lambton Quay, but to divert it into a post office, so as to allow the present custom house buildings to be used solely for custom house and telegraph offices. Applications have been made for over one hundred and sixty thousand shares in the Colonial Insurauce Company. One hundred thousand are to be allotted.

The Presbyterians of Wellington intend to erect a church and school on Adelaide Road.

Twenty-nine municipalities are to be represented at the Conference to be held here.

The custom authorities have offered to have all parcels of kerosene tested upon arrival, provided the Corporation rendered necessary assistance. It is understood that it is the intention of the Government to call in all the arms and ammunition from the civil branch of the constabulary throughout botli Islands.

AUCKLAND. June 17. Work on th* Te Awamutu extension of the Waikato Railway commenced to-day. The remains or Mr. Donald M'Kenzio, aged 78, an old Waterloo veteran, were interred with Masonic honors yesterday, at Onehuncra. The Mayor presided, and said there were three clternative proposals ; - Ist, removal to Queen-street wharf : 2nd, construction of a tunnel under Biiortland-st:-,-->t, and the erection of a station at the bottom of Barrack hill, near Chancerystreet ; 3rd, extension of the line beyond chat point. Mr. T. E. Hill said the •vmoval of the station to the font of barrack hill would increase the traffic on the lino by L3OOO yearly, which represented G per cont. on L 50.000. He moved —" That in the opinion of this meeting immediate action should be taken to brin« the railway to the centre of the city." After some discussion, the motion was carried by a majority.

An influential committee, headed by the Mayor, will wait on the Minister for Public Works upon his arrival.

WAIT ABA. June 17. Wetere, the Mokau chief arrived here this morning. He reports Bewi (Manga) at Waihi, and about 500 natives at Mokau, en route for the meeting.

GBEYMOUTH. June 18. A fire was discovered at 6.30 this morning in a four-roomed cottage occupied by Mr. Hunter, tobacconist. The fire had full hold of the building when discovered. After it was extinguished, the body of Mr. Hunter was found dead in bed much charred. There is no knowledge of how the fire originated. Mr. Hunter was universally respected in Hokitika. Consequent upon Parliament meeting later than expected, tlie Conference of County Councils will be postponed to the ■6th August, at the request of many delegates who are also members of the House.

NEW PLYMOUTH. June 17. The native census returns in the County of Taranaki shows 1838 males, and 1603 females ; total, 3441 ; of these there are 102 female children under 15 years of age, and 456 male children. 4-ithough the return shows an increase since last census, the Civil Commissioner says that from his knowledge since he has been in office there has been a steady decrease. The cause of the apparent increase is attributed to the census being more perfect than in previous years, owing to the present peaceful state of the natives, and the number therefore being more easily ascertained correctly. Great preparations are being made at Waitara for the Native meeting. Rewi is now within two miles of Waitara.

NAPIER. June 17. The Supreme Court sat till after 10 last night, when Carl and Gotlieb Schmidt were found guilty of unlawfullw wounding. Carl received nine, and Gotlieb 12 months. has been occupied with the trial-of Top, for absconding with money of his -creditors. The trial is still proceeding. The case Hartlet v. In. the Supreme ■ Court last night, George Edward Toop was found guilty of absconding with monies which should have been divided amongst his creditors, and. sentenced to 12 months' hard labor. When charging the Grand Jury, Judge Eichmond referred to this case as an instance that tiie arm of the law would even now reach long distances, the prisoner having been arrested at a place more than 200 miles beyond Sydney, and he added that the time might arrive when it would reach to the furthest corner of the civilised world. In every case, tried this as3ize, a conviction has been obtained.

CHRISTCHURCH. June IS. Two large sea lions were captured at the beach, near Leithfield, last night.
