WELLINGTON. June G. Tho Government have increased the salary of Major Te Wheoro another LIOO per annum, the increase to date from the Ist January last. June 7. After considerable debate the City Council lias unanimously adopted Mr. Clarke's drainage scheme. A few details were objected to, but the scheme, as a whole, was appoved. The Speaker has received a telegram from Mr. Larnach, dated the 31st ult., tendering his resignation. It is notified thatjthe seat is now vacant. It is stated that in all cases where the acceptance of tenders for the construction of sections of railway and other public works was postponed, pending advice from London as to the floating of the loan, the Government have resolved to let the contracts. TAPANUI. June 7. D. M'Kellar's stables. Brooksdale, Eskstreet, were burnt down last night, valued, at about L4OO. They were insured in the Victoria Company for LIOO. The floods at the time prevented assistance from reaching, the place, although the fire was plainly seen from the town. The chaff-house'and machinery adjoining were insured. The buggies and harness were saved, but the rest was totally destroyed. The Pomahaka river is very high, and is still rising. The roads are impassable in many pares.

GRAHAMSTOWjST. June 6. The County Council to-day decided to send the Chairman to the Wellington Conference on the 21st July. The Finance Committee recommended that the Counties Act be amended, to enable ratepayers to elect two auditors ; and that the accounts of local Boards receiving Government aid, be subsequently audited by the Government Auditor.

AUCKLAND. June 6. At the Police Court to-day Alexander Campbell, charged with attempting to murder a man named Smith by putting arsenic in his tea, was remanded.
