WELLINGTON.
May 25. The City of Sydney, with the London mails to April 25, left 'Frisco 011 May 10, the contract date. The Australia, with the last outward mail arrived at San Francisco on the 22nd inst., one day in advance of the contract date. The outward 'Frisco mail despatched by the lvrtorua this afternoon consisted of 455S letters, 397 hook packets, and 3544 newspapers for London ; and 325 letters, 55 book packets, and 257 newspapers for America. By the outgoing mail, there were 8-i nominations for assisted immigrants : about half the number received last month.
It is stated that Captain Wheeler will resign tho command of the Hawea in favor of Captain Kennedy, who will hand over the Taiaroa to Captain Wheeler. The cause of the change is that the Hawea's usual route being via East Coast, Capfain Wheeler rarely has an opportunity of seeing his family. May 27. The census returns showing the total population of the whole Colony are now completed, with tho following result: Male's, 230,808 ; females, 183,273 ; total, 414.171. In this is included 4,302 Chinese, but no Maoris. The population of tho Chatham Islands is 100 males and 72 females.
