RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Pauuku, Esq., li.M.) PASSING VALUELESS CHEQUES. Frank Pogson was charged on remand with having passed two valueless cheques, one for LlO and the other for L 7, with intent to defraud Mr. G. L. Longford. Sub-Inspector Smith conducted the prosecution. The prisoner was undefended. Walter Dillwyn Perkins, ledger-keeper in the Bank of Australasia, Christchurch, deposed that he did not know the accused. He had seen the two cheques in question at the JJank in Christchurch, which had been jsresented there through the National Bank. No person of the name of Frank Pogson had an account with the Hank of Australasia, Christchurch. The cheques were consequently valueless. The witness was not cross-examined by the prisoner. lid ward Brown, assistant barman at the Star and Garter Hotel, gave evidence to the effect that Mr. Longford, the landlord, was absent from Oamaru. During his absence witness, under instructions from Mr. Longford, transacted a portion of the business of the hotel. He knew the accused from having seen him at the hotel. He came there on the 12th April, and remained until the 24th. On the latter date the accused asked witness for his account, which was given to him, amounting to L 3 IDs. Gd. Accused then asked for a blank cheque, and received one. Accused drew- a cheque for L 7, and witness gave him a receipt and the balance, L 3 Os. Gd. The cheque was drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Christchurch, and signed " Frank Pogson." It was paid into the National Bank, Oamaru, to Mr. Longford's account. The cheque produced marked " ]■>" was, to the best of his belief, the cheque he received from prisoner. Prisoner did not cross-examine this witness, and was, on the application of Sub-Inspector Smith, further remanded until this day week.
