April 11. Sir John Coocle will be hereon Monday next. The Canterbury railways have already conveyed this season over 46.000 tons of grain. 1 The Government in a letter to the City Council intimate that they will gladly adopt the principles embodied in a resolution passed at the recent Conference, viz., " That proper management and support ' of hospitals'and charitable aid will be best ' provided for by the districts being defined as comprising counties or groups of 001111- ' ties contiguous to or included in miuiicia palities which are likely toavail themselves ' of the same charitable institutions that t are within such districts. Public charir table institutions should be administered, - and charitable aid distributed by a board f representing the Government, and the - several municipal bodies and county 1 councils included therein ; and that such portion of the cost of these institutions 3 and of charitable aid as is required to be ' provided by local bodies should be conJ tributcd by the several municipalities and j counties interested, in proportion to their , population." The Government, however, 1 do not desire to be represented on the f Boards. They will take into careful con- - sideration the question of endowments for : the above institutions as suggested by - the Conference, and they will undertake ■ to contribute an equivalent to any gains ' raised by voluntary subscriptions or con--3 tributions which local bodies may make 3 out of their funds, and will make 110 de- [ ductions trom the subsidies payable under , "The JTinancial Arrangements Act, 1878," . to municipalities, ifcc. The Government will discontinue the present system of dis- • tributing charitable aid on June 30. : April 12. : The City Guards purpose holding an encampment at Temuka during Easter week, provided the Government grant ■ fpee passes on the railways. ———. .<*
