HONOR TO WHOM IT IS DUE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir-The peculiar nature <>f my business -endera it necessary that I should daily n-rambulate the streets of Oamaru, and there ar a great many citizens who have to do likewise. When our are enducted under th™. pleasantest cirenmstnncj'S imaginable, we naturally feel grateful, and I tni't vou will allow me to express a few words of gratefulness to those—our City ! athers—who have done so m"ch to benefit ma quo but every class of citizens. Pnrin:: tho few days high winds have prevai •d lice, but thanks to the wisdom of ■ >nr town councillors, dust has not been permitti-d to fly along the streets, and ■ •■ (V strians h-ivo been loud in tlieir praisas of the mayor ami councillors for providing o many watering earfci, thus doing away with that disagreeable nuisance which is ?o common in cities like Christchurch and Dunedin, where such a thing aa a watering

cart is unknown. There, penplo who have business in the open air during windy wather, have their clothes ruined, and drapers and other shopkeepers have hundreds of pounds' worth of goods spoiled by the clouds of dust which are driven along the streets. Truly, compared with us, f'cy live in an ago of dust ami darkness, when their town councils are not wise enough to provide a few watering carts for the streets. Compare the state of thoie two cities with Oaniarn, and what a difference is apparent. Here, in this delightful town of health and cleanliness, no matter how tierce the wind may blow, there are numbers of watering carts, and dust clouds in the streets are unknown. Who, I ask, have wo to thank for so much regard being paid to the comfort of the citizens as well as the poods of tho shopkeepers. Why, who else but the mayor and his eight, wise councillors. Truly thoy should be immortalised. But how ? Ah,. that in the question. Wo cannot offer the mavor a silver cradle, because bin Councillors have already given him one!. The only thing I can suggest is that a subscription, limited to a penny each, should be started, and when a sufficient sum has been collected, the Mayor and (with their consent) two or three of tho Councillors who have retired from business, should proceed Home to visit some of the principal tanneries for tho purpose of procuring a supply of leather wherewith to manufacture nine medals, the Mayor and each Councillor to receive ouo : the presentation to be made by S. O. Shrimski, Esq., MMI.K. (with his consent, of course),, and the day to be proclaimed a public holiday. Tim medals could lie retained in the recipients' families as heirlooms, and w tangible proof to future generations that men who have labored hard in the cause of duty arc sometimes suitably rewarded, oven though they are not always appreciated. I enclose one penny to start the subscription ; and with the wish that this scheme should be successfully carried out, 1 conclude thitu letter of Sarcasm. [Our correspondent omitted to enclose the penny.—Js». E.M.\
