An unexpected hitch has occurred in the BroomhaH negotiations, which will probably upset them. The AttornevGeneral advises Government that by the 29th clause of the Waste Lands Act all negotiations are invalid. It is contended | that though power is given totheGovern- ! ment to sell the lands of the Colony Iv private contract, those lands under negotiation were never the property of tin Crown, the Native title not being extinguished. NEW PLYMOUTH. April 4 The census returns show the popnlatioi of Taranaki County to be 7305, liavin nearly doubled itself in four years. T.'. town of New Plymontli shows a population of 2680, being ar. increase of 640 ii four years. The Grev and Bell distric four years ago had 180S souls in it. Tin census returns now show 3807- Ther. are 1559 houses -in the County, an increase of 515, and in New Plyuioutl 599, showing an increase of 10. GRAHAMSTOWN. April 5. The census returns are as follows : Borough—population, 2880 males ; 2575 females. Thames county - population. 4960; Pinko coiintv. 447 ; total population i.f the Thames district, 10.425. In 1874 including Coromandel, the population was 2,272. Coromandel returns are not yet completed.
