The Evening Mail. MONDAY, APRIL 1, 1878.
The North Otago Times informs its readers this morning that, through representations made by his Worship the Mayor to the Hon. J. T. Fisiieu, on tne occasion of that Minister's late visit to Oamaru, steps have been taken to prevent a repetition of the delay winch lias several times occurred in the transmission oftheOamaru portion of the Suez mail from Dunedin. This announcement will be welcomed by the people of this part of the Otaco Provincial District; but, it is our duty to state that Mr. Bark, Chief j Postmaster at Dunedin, on reading the first complaint of the Oamaru press in regard to this matter we think it appeared in the Mail—immediately made representations to the proper quarter which resulted in prompt measures being set on foot to rectify the evil complained of The letter from the Government in replv to his Worship the Mayor's representations, published in the North Ohuju Times this'morning, states that ''instructions had already been issued to the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, relative to the treatment of correspondence from Oamaru and the North Otago offices on the occasion of the arrival at Port Chalmers, via the Bluff Harbour, of the inward Suez and Australian mails." The fact is that when the last articles appeared on the subject in the Mail Mid North Otagu Times, the matter was receiving the attention of the Postal authorities in response to the rirst complaint that was made m our columns. In these days of official lethargy and inattention, it is praiseworthy that Mr. Bare, should have lost so littie time in setting about rectifying the evil.
