The North Otago Horticultural Society's Show was-well patronised last evening, the Vo unteer Hall being c»mfortab'y filled with visitors. During the evening some very good nrasic was discoursed by Messrs. Karle (violin), Pheloung (cornet), and Smith (piano. Despite the wretched weather on Saturday afternoon, the .Autumn Show of the Society has been hi.uhly successful. Thanks to ihe energy of a number of gentlemen, the display made was one of the best ever se?n in Oamam. We can only tru-st that the Sociefy w : ll be equally fortunate in the future in obtaining the co-operation and assistance not only of those who on this occasion aided so materially in making the affair a success, but of others who are known to be in a po-ithm to possess articles in abundance well worthy of occupying a prominent place at any horticultural exhibition.

Sir George Grey has received a telegram from Sit- John t 'oode, intimating that he will leave Melbourne by the first vessel for this Colony for the purpose oi inspecting and reporting upon the various harbour-.

We were in error iu stating that the monthly meeting of ihe Hospital Committee would be held l;:st evening. The meeting will take place this evening, at S o'clock.

The United States Minstrels will reappear at the Masonic Hall to-morrow evening, when a very excelh-nt programme will bepres nted. Jinking from the amount of success which the troupe met with on the occasion of its last visit, we doubt not they will be welcomed by a large audience.

The weekly meeting of St. Paul's Young Men's Association was largely attended last evening, and amoiig-t those presi-nt was a goodly sprinkling or the fair sex. The subject chosen for discussion was " Which confers the greater ha on mankind, the pleasures of Hope or the pleasures of Memcry ':'. A lengthy and animated debate took plac\ at the conclusion of which a vote was taken, resulting in favor of hope.

As will be seen by an advertisement in another column, Mr. W. L. Bees, M.H.R., will deliver a !• cturc in the Volunteer Hall on Saturday evening next, the subject b hig "The Lost Tribes of Israel." This announcement needs little comment at our hands, for Mr. Kees' ability as a lecturer has already become known throughout the colony. The chair will be occupied by Mr. T. W. Ilislop, M.H.R., and, as the prices of admission are extremely moderate, wc have no doubt Mr. Rees will be greeted by a crowded audience.

We draw the attention of members of the Phi harmonic Society to an advertisement which appears elsewhere, announcing the postponement of the practice until Friday next, when it will be held in the Waitaki Hall. We leain that this change of day and place is quite unavoidabl j. The acceptances and general entries for the Timaru Races, which are to trske place on Thursday and Iriday next, appear in .-mother column. As will be seen by an advertisement which appears in another portion of our present issue, the Railway Department has made special arrangements for the conveyance of visitor.*; but with a view, no doubt, to saving a little advertising, the department refers the pubiie t<i slips posted at the various stations for fuller particulars.

The result of the trial of reapers and binders under the auspices of the Dnnedin Agricultural and I'a-toral Society was that M'Cormick's obtained the first prize, and Reid and Gray's second. Wood's machine did not compete, the only other competitor being Osborne's.

The DaV>t Times of yesterday says : "Whether owing to the presence of B uley and Cooper's circus in Duuedin or not, it is a fact that every train arriving at the Dunedin station on Saturday -was completely crowded with passengers. One of the afternoon train-, indeed, brought three horse trucks, in addition to the ordinary passenger carriages tilled with a human load. All day, too, the traius were behind time, the time occupied at the diiFerent stations along the line in taking up passengers being much longer than usual."

From a contemporary we learn that the Sau Francisco mail steamer Australia, which arrived at Auckland a few days ago, brought a party of Americans who have started on a somewhat extended tour, to include Australia, India, and Knrope. Most of the.-e gentlemen are journalists, who are to write accounts of their trip. Among them are Mr. C. Lee, of San Francisco, and Mr. R. Buchauan, of Ontario, Canada. The party went on with the Australia to Sydney, but. will probably make some stay in New Zealand on their return.

An accident resulting in the. death of a man named George Burley, happened near Mataura on Thursday. Deceased had attempted to stop a runaway horse, and in doing so fell down, the wheel of the cart which the animal was drawing passing over his i-tomaeh. He died in the Invercargill Hospital about 3 o'clock the same afternoon.
