(per press agency.) <& WELLINGTON. February 16. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Seymour George, J. C. Brown, and other conspicuous members of the Grey party, waited upon Mr. Barton, at the gaol, this afternoon, in oi'der to endeavour to induce him to withdraw from the election, and urging that to allow two Grey candidates to stand would practically return Mr. Pearce, by splitting the Liberal votes. Mr. Barton absolutely declined to discuss the matter, saying he had his own battle to fight, and knew what lie was doing. All parties are very busy perfecting arragements for the election. Sir George Grey and the Hon. M/essrs. Macandrew and D'ishev wilj leave on Mon= day night by the Hiuemoa, calling first at the Buller, then at Greymouth, fjokitika, Jackson's Bav, and all the West Coast povts to the lllufy.
The Hon. j. Siieelian has just returned from the Wairarapa, having arranged satisfactorily the long standing dispute in regard to the fishing rights and drainage of the Wairnrapa lake, which existed between the tiatives and adjoining runholders. Nine hundred natives were present, and amongst them were the chiefs Henari, Tomona, and Karaitiana Taka-moi-ana, sJi.lJ.i-j.. Mr. Barton's son convened a public meeting to-night in connection with his father's candidature. The meeting was well attended. Mr. Anderson, of the Evening Pod. proposed a vote of confidence in Mr. Barton as representative of the city. Mr. Gillon seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously.

A conference between the local bodies of the- Thames and Waikato. with reference to the proposed railway connecting the Thames and YVaikatn, passed a resolution pledging the local boards to supportcapitalists or a company proposing to construct a line, and also requesting the Government to amend that portion of the District Railways Act exempting Government- and native lands from rates.
