DEPUTATIONS TO THE HON. MR. LARNACH.

* During yesterday afternoon several other deputations on various matters waited upon the Hon. Mr. Larnach. The following is a brief summary of tile proceedings : IMMICKATIOX TOOAirAKC. At half-past three o'clock, Mr. T. Y. Duncan, as Ch.iirtuan of the Waitaki Road Board aiid a member of the County Council, accompanied by Mr. Shrimski, M.H.R., and his Worship the Mayor, interviewed the Minister with reference to immigration to Oamaru. Mr- Duncan pointed out that immigrants were sent direct to the Bluii", and asked that the same advantage might lie extended to Oamaru, complaining that Oamaru obtained only those who could not be drafted off at Dunedin. He also pointed out that agricultural labourers and a few handicraftsmen and female servants were the classes required for this district. After some remarks by the Mayor and Mr. Shrimski, Mr. Larnach promised to make inquiries ivith a view to an immigrant ship calling at Qamaru to land immigrants, or otherwise to arrange for the Oamaru portion to be transhipped immediately on arrival at any other port.

BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. At a quarter to four a deputation, consisting of ' Mr. Neil Fleming, President, and Mr. C. S. Allen, Treasurer, of the North Otago Benevolent Society, was introduced by the Mayor, the result of their interview being that Mr. Larnach approved of the request that the Immigration Barracks and cottages with adjoining lands should bo legally vested in the Society, or in Trustees for the Society, and promised to bring the matter before the Government, with a view to a Bill being prepared for this purpose in the case of Oamaru, and also of Invcrcargill. He considered that the Society was entitled to subsidy to the extent, at any rate, of LI for LI, and authorised the Treasurer, in making an application to Mr. Ballanoe, the Colonial Treasurer, io quote his (Mr. Larnach's) opinion in support thereof; and also was of opinion that in the en so of the man M'Leod, tin Government should pay the cost of his passage Home, recommending the Society to make au application to that effect to the Colonial Secretary, the Hon. Colonel Whitmoro. TUB HARBOVK-MASTER'S IiETIIUNT' AT.T.OWAXCB, Mr. Shrimshi, M.IT.R., and his Worship the Mayor, as Vice-Chairman of the Harbour Board, then waited on Mr. Larnach with reference to the above. Mr. Larnach said that the Government admitted that Captain Sewell's claim, and that of the Bluff Harbour-master, were equally good with that of Capt. Thomson, of Dunedin, and that provision would be made accordingly. MVNICIr \L MATTEI?S. The Mayor and Councillor Mainland then interviewed Mr. Larnach with reference to various Municipal matters. Mr. Larnach promised that a man should be stationed at Thames-street rail-way-crossing, and that the proper signals should be given so as to prevent danger of accident from passing trails. He also promised that instructions should bo given to open a street line in lieu of that portion of Isis-street taken up by the railway. Several other matters brouglit-under his notice were also promised, attention. This completed a pretty extensive series of interviews, and at half-past five o'clock Mr. Larnach, accompanied by the Chairman, Secretary, and several members of the Harbour Board, Messrs. IVI 'Master, C. S, Allen, and others, visited the harbour works. The Hon. Mr. Larnach exexpressed great satisfaction with the progress made.
