It is said that the measures for the readjustment of the representation and the extension of the franchise promised by the Ministry are in course of preparation, and that the basis will be a six months' residence in the electoral district before registration, and that the general roll will be periodically revised and corrected in connection with the ratepayers' roll. It is thought that the present electoral districts will be altered, and rerarranged in accordance with population, but not so as to increase the present number of members in the House of Representatives. February 7.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report, under date London, Jan. 29, that the Bank rate then stood at 3 per cent,
AUCKLAND. February 6. Levy departed suddenly per the mail steamer, having sent the company to Cambridge, proposing to follow in a special train. A large amount of salaries are left unpaid. Shaw, the Pakelia Maori, at Mokau, who recently travelled through the King Country, waited 071 the Native Minister to-day, requesting the Land Court to issue a title to the native owner, he having consented to attend the Court. The Government owns 50,000 acres in the district. Shaw wants the Government to proclaim Mokau an open. port. In reply to the Mayor and Borough Council of Onehunga, the Ministers promised to reduce the tariff at the new railway wharf to the same rates as at the Auckland wharf. The Premier and the Hon. Mr. Fisher leave in the Hinemoa at 10.30 to-morrow, to visit Taranalji, and proceed direct thence to Wellington, not calling at Kelson. They will afterwards visit Cantei--bury and Otago. The Australians practised this morning, and expressed satisfaction with the ground, and the better arrangements made than for the Canterbury match. If the weather is fine there will be a large assemblage of ladies on the ground.
CHBISTCHUKCH. February 6. There is a strong feeling in cricket circles thai the annual match with Otago should not be allowed to fall through, and it is very probable that if the Selection Committee do not arrange for a team to visit Dunedin, a team will be got together independent of the Cricket Association. Such a proceeding is freely talked about. —■ :1 -* — ■- TIMAEU. February 7. The inquest on the infant child of Margaret Wilson is adjourned till Monday week, to enable the mother to be present. Br. M'lotyre's evidence tended to show that death resulted from suffocation caused by pressure on the neck. A wound was also found at the bade of the skull, extending to the neck. The mother has been removed to the Hospital in cusr tody,
NEW PLYMOUTH. February 6. The result of the polling to-day for the Borough loan of L 25,000 was in favour of raising the loan, the majority being 131.
