[FROM OUH OWN COHKEKI'ONDENT.J 0 DUNEDIN. January 11. In criticising Mr. Reynold's speech, the '•"(tbli't says :—" Politicians are manifestly afraid of a block vote. They clearly foresee its consequences, and depreciate and lose no opportunity in endeavouring to raise a f-d.se issue, with a few to deluding, if possible, the Catholic body. It is in" vain. We are not seeking to have Catholics returned, for the simple reason that it would be insanity to do so ; but we are determined to punish our enemies ; and. by throwing political parties into confusion, to compel them to consider our claims, treat our demands with respect, and do us justice." A Synod deputation will wait upon Ministers on Monday re Sunday work on railways. Thu* agitation over tho harbour endowment waxes warmer. This afternoon, a large meeting of importers and others carried a resolution in favour of the Boai-d retaining for a while the disputed block, which is unsuitable for railway station purposes, as, to make it available, Rattray and Jetty streets must be closed. If the Government maintains its present attitude, a mass meeting will be called, and the Board will threaten to retain possession despite the Government.
