HARBOUR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board washeld to-day, at the Harbour Chambers, when there were present —Mr. G. Sumpter (chairman), the Hon. H. J. Miller,'the Hon. 11. Campbell, Messrs. Shrimski, Borrie, Meek, Menlove, Steward. MINUTES, ETC. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. BEPORT OF PROPOSED "WORKS. An interim report was read from a sub-committee appointed to consider the question of the proposed reclamation of the lagoon, and the question of completing the Harbor works, with instructions to confer with the Engineer on the subject. The Committee reported that the Engineer had been requested to prepare' a scheme for the completion of the Harbor works, together with a sketch plan, to be afterwards elaborated. The Secretary had also been requested to obtain soundings from the Breakwater to the Boat harbor as opportunity offered, the Engineer and Harbormaster to bo requested, to act with ihe Secretary in the matter. RAILWAY WORKS. The following letter was read : "Public Works Office, "Wellington, Dec. 27, 1577. "?h\ —The Hon. the Minister for Public Works directs me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th November, and to express his regret at the inconvenience qcca-: sioned by the want of trucks, which has, however, been unavoidable.
"The Minister at the same time desires me to assure yon that every effort is being made to remove the inconvenience as soon as
possible; and it is hoped that several hundred additional trucks will be placed on the various lines during the next few months.— &c, ■;, "John Knowles, "Under-Secretary for Public Works. " The Chairman Oamaru Harbor Board." DRAIN WANTED. Mr. W. Gillespie applied for permission to excavate a trench in Harbor-street, for the purpose of constructing a drain from his property.—Permission granted. TELEGRAPH TO BREAKWATER. A letter was read from Mr. Conyers, in reply to one from the Board, stating that the Board's application with reference to the introduction of the telegraph between the Oamaru Railway Station and the Breakwater line should be forwarded direct to the Minister for Public Works. NUISANCE. A letter was read from Mr. Burnett, assistant engineer, stating that he had abated the nuisance at the Railway Station. " ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of L 1970 10s. Gd. were passed for payment. A claim for LSOO for procuration of a loan raised in 1874 liavi g been received from Messrs. Haggitc Bros, and Brent, it was resolved to reply that the Board | denied any responsibility in the matter, having already paid a claim for professional services. IMPROVED .MACHINERY. On the motion of Mr. Steward, it was resolved, "That the attention of the Engineer be directed to a report in the Rome. News of the 15th November of a visit of the Right Hon. Mr. Gladstone to the Dublin Harbour Works, in which it is stated that concrete blocks of upwards of 350 tons weight are lifted by machinery set in motion by a 16-horse power engine, with a view if possible of obtaining further information on the subject. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. A fortnight's leave of absence was granted to Mr. Forrester. The Board then adjourned.
