General Hon veil's corps on the Balkans has 800 men frost-bitten, of whom 53 have died. Turkej- has applied, through England, for an armistice. Mr. Layard has officially informed the Porte t) at Rnssia required an annisfcice, to be arranged between the opposing commanders. Six thousand Turks engaged the Russians near Erzeroum. The Russians were defeated. Seindia's conduct in India is regarded as disaffected. A Berlin telegram states that through the friendly action of Germany, Russia giyes a guarantee of non-interference
with English interests, and England consents to direct negociations between Russia and Turkey.

Despatches which have been received from newspaper special correspondents announce that the Turks have abandoned the Schipka Pass, and that General Radettsky has advanced as far as Kesanlik. Raouf Pasha has been appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of the Turkish army in Rangtin and Roumelia.
Melbourne, January 9. A Government Gazette issued yesterday announces the dispensing with the services of several hundreds of classified officers, including all the County Court Judges, Police Magistrates, Engineer-in-Chief, Railway Engineer, and the permanent heads of the Land and Public Works and Customs Departments. Sydney, January 8. Mr. Marshall, wood sculptor, leave today for New Zealand, per Wakatipu.
