(I>EH PKESS AGENCY.) . <p WELLINGTON. January T. The Supreme Court sittings opened to-day before his Honor the Chief Justice. With regard to the uttering of a valueless cheque, the Chief Justice remarked that the charge of false pretences could be supported even if the person who uttered the cheque made no verbal representation in doing so. He also pointed out that a medical certificate for an absent juryman was of no use. It was necessary that all certificates should be supported by evidence on oath. There were thirteen cases; three of which were charges of obtaining money by fals,a pretences ; one of robbery with violence ; fine] the others of larceny. True bills were found in all eases but one. January 8. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report from London (the date not given) that the. wool market is unchanged, Tu date 40,000 bales have arrived, and there has been a littlo private inquiry. Jaimary 7. At the Supreme Court to-day. Judge Johnston, in his charge to the Grand Jury, said, that although there were twelve cases for trial, the calendar was not a heavy one, nearly all of the offences being of an ordinary character. John Hill, for larceny as a bailee, was sentenced to six months, and Berry, a/iu* McDonald, for forging and uttering, to twelve months.

January 7. At the opening of the Supremo Court, the Judge, in his charge, remarked that the calendar, although rather heavier, consisted of lighter offences. Fletcher, for larceny, was sentenced to six months ; Nelson, for horse-stealing, to eighteen, months ; M'Mahon, eighteen months, and Coughlan, nine months, for the Nottingham Castle rubbery, The whale ship Gazelle has arrived at Russell with 225 barrels of sperm. Since leaving in May, she reports the James Arnold, with 145 barrels since December, and the California, with "170 barrels, only three weeks from IVlongonui, Arrived—Ship May Queen, 05 days' from Gravesoiul, with forty-six passengers, all well. She had a, pleasant voyage throughout. Captain Lapsell was presented by the passengers with a testimonial.

January 7. Torrents of rain full chiving last night and to-day, accompanied with hail. Considerable fears are entertained for the wheat crop, a largo portion of which is cut down. The remainder is much beaten down.
