Tiie Ryno, which lias arrived from Swallow Isl.mds, reports that, on the2-ith hist., the mail steamer City of New Yorkwas sighted, steering north. After sighting her, she appeared to change her cours'', and stand straight for the Ryno. Tiie captain took' the wheel, and all hands shouted to the steamer to keep clear, and a blue light was burnt. Those on the steamer, on seeing the blue light, put her helm hard clown, and braced the i ards. crossing the Ryno's how at a distance of about 50 yards, a voice from the steamer calling out, "Put out that light." Tiie Ryno was burning both lights, and the opinion of those on board is that, had the blue lights not been burnt, the Ryno would have been cut down.
Mr. Long, surveyor, died suddenly at Onehunga. Morphia, which lie had used for neuralgia, lay by his bed side, but the medical opinion is favourable to a belief that deatli was caused by apoplexy. Last night, the Dispatch Foundry took fire near the boiler. The fire speedily communicated with the fitting room, machine room, and patrern shop, which were all destroyed. The Fire' Brigade was promptly o,u the spot, and saved all the other buildings. Tiie damage has not bfen estimated. The property was insured for L3OOO, distributed amongst several offices. DUJSEDIN. October 30. In answer to a requisition, Mr. L;aiy has consented to contest the Mayoral election. Mr. George Millar, of Ota go Steam Laundry, was proceeded against this morning for a breach of the Employment
of Females Act, by causing women work in his laundry on Saturday afternoon. Judgment was reserved. LTTTELTON. October 30. The p.s. Titan left this afternoon to search for the wreck of the schooner Clan Alpine.
