MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of tlu> Municipal Council took place last evening. There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Gibbs, Procter, Mainland, Liddle, Headland, Familton, and Spence. MINUTES. The minutes of last general and one special meetings were read and continued, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. SliY-nilOO NEM.INO. A letter was read from the Minister of Justice intimating that immediate consideration would be given to the representation from the Council on the subject of sly-grog selling. Commissioner Weldon also wrote, stating l.ii realinc-ss to do all in his power to put down the sly-grog selling evil. After sonic discussion, the Miyor said tha', with the consent of the Council, ho would write to the proper quarter, sug <r ( stuig that the law should be amended so as to allow of the informer receiving part of the penalty. INDIAN FAMINE. A letter having been received from his Worship the Mayor of Dunedin, asking the assistance of the Council in the matter of the relief of the distress in India, it was resolved that the Mayor be asked to convene a public meeting lor Thursday evening at some convenient, place. THIS UNSERVES MM,. Telegrams in reference to the above Bill were read from Mr. Hislop, M.H.R., and the lion. Mr. Miller. A telegram was also read from the Hon. Mr. Robinson, expressing his thanks for the message sent by the Mayor, and saying that it was gratifying to him to leant that any action of his in reference to any Bill brought before the Legislative Council merited the approval of the enterprising people of Oaniaru. .U'VKNILK INIH'STHIAI, EXHIBITION. A letter was read from Mr. James James, Secretary to the Otago Auxiliary Committee for'the Australian .Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, asking the Council's assistance towards procuring exhibits and raising necessary funds to secure Otago being well represented. It was decided that Mr. Jaims bo informed that the Council did not see its way to ;,ake anyactive part in the matter. THE WATERWORKS. A letter was read from Mr. Peter Aitchisoii, Secretary to the Trustees of the Georgetown Cemetery, calling upon the Council to remove all earth deposited on said cemetery by the Waterworks contractor within eight days from date. - Referred to the Engineer. LEVELS OK WHARF STREET. A letUr from Mr. Fdleul, asking information re permanent levels of Wharfstreet, opposite Block XXXV., was ref 'rred to the Engineer to supply the information requested. PERMISSION WA.NTEI). An application from Mr. P. Blakesley, asking permission to open the footpath to repair drain in Tyne-street, was referred t » the Engineer, with power to grant application. ARBITRATION. A letter was read from Mr. Council, as Waterworks Commissioner, asking tho Council to appoint an arbitrator in tho cases of the respective claims of Mr. George Aitchison, Donald Borrie, and John Cameron. Mr. Neil Fleming was appointed in each case. footpath in ex e-street. A letter from Messrs. Hislop and Creagh, on behalf of Mrs. Gr,;ce Snarl', asking that the footpath in Exe-Ntreet might be reduced to tho permanent level, was referred to Works Committee for report. Councillor Spence presented a petition signed by about 20 of the workmen on a tunnel contract on the Waterworks, ask- : ing the Council's assistance towards oh-, tabling payment of tho wages d"e to them, the sub-contractor having levanted, After some discussion, the Mayor and Councillors Gibos and Procter were appointed a Committee to consult with tho petitioners. HOI'SB OFIMVFAMK. Councillor Procter presented a petition signed by several residents in Coquetstreet complaining of the existence in t]m neighbourhood of a house of ill-fame, and asking the Council's assistance to obtain a remedy'. Some discussion took place, and if was eventually decided thr.t the only course practicable was to write to tho Subinspector of Police, drawing his attention to the matter, and urging him to endeavour to put a stop to the evil complained of. REPORT OF THE PUJtMC WORKS COMMITTKIC.

A Un.'thy report from thin Committee was read and adopted. Tin; Committee stated that, in conjunction with a committee of resident* in Alu-street, it hud inspected that street, and agrocd to certain modifications in the levels previously proposed ; that there was no objection to the Acclimatisation Society bejnjf granted a lease of the site asked for by thorn, hut they were of opinion that a portion of tho Garden Reserve would he a better site for the Sooiety's purposes. ENGINEKIt's RKPOIIT. The Engineer reported upon the various works in hand. HVMP SITE. It was resolved that the Engineer bo allowed to keep on as many men at thia work as he may find necessary, until next general meeting,

DRAIN IX TEES-STREET. The Engineer reported that the cost of forming & drain in Tees-street, as part of a permanent system of drainage, as per plan submitted, would be L 866 14s. It ■was not deemed advisable to proceed with the work at present, but the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances was calh d to the necessity of more strict supervision ■with regard to the surface drains and .-side channels throughout the town, particularly in Tees-street, and also with regard to the condition of yards and back premises. WORKS IN TJRE-STREET. Tenders were opened for these works as follow :—Hector Munro, L 348 ; Moses Rasbatch, L 223 10s. ; William Twiss, L 194 9s. 5d ; JJavid Heron, L 193 os. Bd. The tender of David Heron was accepted. EXCAVATION AT GASWORKS. It -was ordered that fresh tenders be called for this work, tenderers to give alternative prices—(l) for depositing the earth taken out in Severn-street, and (2) for depositing it in Humber-street. ACCOUNTS. The accounts, as read, were passed for payment. FOOTBRIDGE IN WEAR-STREET. On the motion of Councillor Gibbs, it was ordered that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for a footbridge across the railway in Wear-street. The Council adjourned at 10.20 p.m.
