The names of both the members from this district are absent from the division list on the second reading of the Charitable Institutions Bill. A special meeting of the Municipal Council was held to-day, for the purpose of considering some telegrams from his Worship the Mayor, who is at present in Wellington attending the Conference. The following Councillors were present—Messrs. Headland (in the chair), Mainland, Procter, and Spence. The first matter considered was a telegram from his Worship with reference to the widening the street at Bee's corner. Messrs. J. C. Gilchrist and J. Spence were interviewed on the matter, and the result of the interview was ordered to be tel. graphed to the Mayor. A telegram was also read in reference to the proposed exchange of the gaol site, in which his Worship stabed that the Government had agreed to accept the offer of the Corporation. The Engineer was instructed to prepare plans of the new gaol site, and telegraph the boundaries of the same to the Mayor. It having been requested by the Mayor that the next general meeting of the Council should be postponed until Monday, Aug. 13, the Council agreed to comply with the request.

It will bo seen by our Parliamentary report that the Government have made arrangements for opening telegraph offices i.t all the principal railway stations in the Colony, The pursuance of such a course will confer a great benefit upon the public, and the only matter of surprise in connection with the subject is that such a step was not taken long since. The only business brought before M . Packer at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning was the hearing of two civil cases, which were as follows :—Campbell and Adams v. William Ogilvie—claim L2O Is. lid! for goods supplied ; debt admitted by defendant, and judgment given for ninount and LI lis. costs. Ppence and Bee v. J. Patrick—claim LS 4s. 6d., for goods supplied ; defendant not appearing, judgment was given for the amount, with 13s. cost?.

The regular fortnightly meeting of the Harbour Board, which should have been held this morning, did not eventuate, owing to there not being sufficient members present to form a quorum.

Many of our readers -will be pleased to learn that Miss Murray, formerly of the Oamaru Grammar School, and who has been a student in the Normal School since its opening, has been chosen schoolmistress of Anderson's Bay School.

A meeting of the Mechanics' Institute Committee was held last evening, when there were present —Messrs. Filluel, VicePresident (in the chair), Thornton. Milligan, Loring, Tempest, Blackburn, and Hickey (Hon. Secretary). The minutes of the last ordinary meeting and one special meeting were read and confirmed. The Hon. Secretary read the draft of an agreement drawn up as between the new Librarian and the Committee, which was approved of. On the motion of Mr. Thornton, seconded by Mr. Milligan, it was rerolved—" That the Librarian be specially instructed to see that non-members do no!; frequent the readingroom, except when introduced by members, as provided in the by-laws." The Librarian was also instructed to enforce all fines for books and periodicals kept by subscribers over the specified time. The Secretary and Treasurer were authorised to have all necessary repairs to the building effected at once, A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting. The match to be played by the Football Club to-morrow afternoon, will be between old and new members of the Club. The following are the sides chosen : —Old — Holdsworth, Booth, Walls, M'Glashan, Wait, Bickey, Tempest, Rice, M'Donald, Burnett, Rhodes, Hardy, Hassell, Waters, Pickett. New—Thompson, Fersns, Bennett, Otterson, Finch, G. Fenwick, Grenfell, Honour, Carncross, Gow, Filleul, Kerr, Baxter, Church, Crawford.

Mr. A. H. Maude will continue the sale of the stock-in-trade of Mr. J. Moss, tomorrow, on the premises, between the hours of noon and 5 p.m., and from G. 30 to 9 p.m. Messrs. Fleming and Hedley will hold a sale at noon to-morrow of the stock-in-trade of the late Mr. Geo. Anderson, on the premises, Thames-street.

Mr. Walter Rice, of Cardrona, has been appointed master to the newly-established School at Ngapara. A meeting of gentlemen favourable to the formation of a coursing club will be held at the Empire Hotel at three o'clock to-mor-row. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Benevolent Society will be held in Mr. Church's office on Monday evening, at 7 o'clock.
