COUNTY COUNCIL CONTRACTORS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir, —I am an admirer of our County Council. I esteem their clever and active officers, and I especially admire the conscientious contractor who is placing on the road between the Town Belt at Awamoa and White Rocks road end the strange material he is putting there ; but surely some one of the three is making a mistake.
I read the specification of the said contract, I saw the sample of the metal in the office of the Council, and I have seen the material which is being placed on the road in question, and I notice that the stuff being used and the sample submitted have nothing in common. Had I known that mud and dust would have been received as basalt rock, I would have tendered for the work ; but, believing that real bluestone was required, and that nothing else would be passed by the officer of the Board who superintends the work, I could not tender at the price at which it was taken. But I think that it would have been better policy on the part of the Council to have paid even a higher price, and had it done effectively, than to let it be done as it is.—Yours, &c, x y. z.
