WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The regular monthly meeting of the Council was held to-day at the Council Chambers. There were present—Messrs. D. Sutherland, Duncan, Todd, Wheatley, Murcott, W. Sutherland, Craig, and Johnston.

Owing to the unavoidable absence of Hon. R. Campbell, Mr. D. Sutherland was voted to the chair.

MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE. A quantity of outward correspondence was read and approved. A NOTICE. A letter was read from Mr. F. Fulton giving -.notice that lie intended opposing the proposed alteration of the creek at PapaKaio from the present to the old course, on the ground that it would do serious injury to his paddocks, and intimating that he would prosecute anyone trespassing upon his property. On the motion of Mr. Duncan, seconded by Mr. Johnston, the Inspector was instructed to proceed with the work as decided at the last meeting. miners' rights. On the motion of Mr. Wheatley, .seconded by Mr. Murcott, it was resolved that the Clerk should write to Mr. Robinson, the Warden at Naseby, asking what had become of the money received for miners' rights from the miners at Clark's diggings, and which money belonged to the Waitaki County Council.

DEPUTATION. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Steward, Hislop, and Evans, waited upon the Council from the OamaruNaseby Railway Committee. Mr. Steward briefly introduced the deputation, and explained at length the objects of the deputation, the chief of which was a request to the Council to give their assistance in getting the Bill passed through Parliament. He pointed out that it would greatly facilitate the passing of the Bill were the Council to give its approval of the measure by w.ij' of a resolution. It would also be desirable for the Council to pass a resolution in favour of the setting aside of 100,000 acres of land to form an endowment fund for the construction of the railway.

Mr. Hislop gave some further information with regard to the general principles of the Bill which he had prepared for submission to Parliament. After Mr. Steward had answered a number of questions put to him by members of the Council, the deputation thanked the Council and withdrew, the Chairman intimating that the Council would take the matter into consideration and forward a reply. The Council then adjourned for luncheon, and on resuming at 2 o'clock, the following members were present : Messrs. D. Sutherland (in the chair), Duncan, Todd, Wheatlej', Johnston, and W. Sutherland. WAIKARI CREEKS. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Mee, Borton, Evans, and Stewart, representing the settlers of the Waikari, waited upon the Council, with the view of bringing under the notice of the Council the desirability of diverting the Waikari Creeks.

The various members of the deputation explained at great length what they thought necessary to be done, and replied to several questions put by members of the Council. After the matter had been argued at great length, the Chairman intimated that the Council would take the matter into consideration during the afternoon, and a reply would be sent. The deputation then thanked the Council and withdrew. ROAD THROUGH FAPAKAIO PRE-EMPTIVJE. A deputation consisting of Messrs. Evans, Aitcheson, Borton, Moe, and Stewart —representing the Waitaki Road Board—then waited on the Council, and urged the Council to take the road through the Papakaio pre-emptive, and declare it a County road. After hearing the arguments of the deputation, the Chairman intimated that the Council would also consider the matter during the day and give a reply. The deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. TOUNDS. A letter was read from the Under-Se-cretary pointing out the necessity for the Council gazetting all pounds under its jurisdiction. The consideration of the letter was postponed until next meeting.

CLOSING ROAD. A letter from Mr. Alexander Pirie, Clerk to the Otepopo Road Board, forwarding the resolution passed by the ratepayers of Otepopo in favour of closing a certain road.—As the Act required that ten days' notice should be given of the intention of the Council to consider the decision of the ratepayers, the matter was postponed until next meeting. COUNTY ROADS. A letter from the Clerk of the Waiareka Road Board was read, urging upon the Council the desirability of declaring the two Waiareka main district roads as county roads, in terms of the notice of motion given by Mr. Todd. Mr. Todd then moved that th# whole of the No. 1 Main Road, Waiartka, should be declared County roads, in accordance with the Act.

Mr. Johnston seconded the motion. Mr. Wheatley moved, as an amendment, that that portion of the road from the Town Boundary to Waiareka only should be declared a County road.

Mr. W. Sutherland seconded tho amendment. The amendment was nog tivcd, arm the original motion agreed to. Mr. Todd said he would not i T »ove the motion with reference to No. 2 road. [Left sitting.]
