THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT TO DUNEDIN. TO TIIE EDITOR. Sir.,—ln A'ouv issue of the 19th inst, you comment on an article in your previous issue, taken from the Guardian, regarding the proposed visit of the Governor to Dunedin. Perhaps you will allow me space in your columns to state my opinion, which agrees with that of others of your readers—that the article in question is called for, and only gives expression to the views and feelings of the people generally of Otago. Tiie underhand and unjust way by winch the Abolition party effected their purpose is deserving of severe censure. The Governor, by favouring that party, has justly incurred the reprobation, of the Opposition, who were manfully de= fending tiieir rig]its. The people of Otago have a right, as British subjects to be their own lawgivers, and control their Government ; but their rights Jtnd liberties have been trampled under foot by officious individuals, who have plotted together usurp the sovereignity of the people and reign supremely over them. The centralising and tyrannising power manifested is patent to ali. The people of Otago may now see clearly that their prosperity is concerned in x'etaining the power of government in their own hands and among themselves. The absurd statements circulated, asserting that they would be better governed from Wellington than Dunedin, is not only unfounded, but experience, since the change, proves them to be very false. It is to be hoped your journal will maintain the rights of the people, whioh have been much abused. It is no wonder that the people of Dunedin should decline to give the Governor a public reception.— I am, &c., A Daily Readee.
