I The Governor arrived this morning,■ He was presented with addresses both atl Port Chalmers and Dunedin, but waa coldly received, only the faintest clieetl being raised in Dunedin. M'Laren coulil not present his address, but the unera-I ployed drew up in line, with two dirty! bags as banners, on which were the word,! "Unemployed." I THE FOSSIL WHALE BONES,I A number of fossil whale bones, obtained near the Corporation Offices, Oamaru, have be*jn presented by Dr. Wilkins to the Museum. Their value, geologically, is that they demonstrate the marine origin of the Oamaru silt, which laps over the hills from the Horse Range to the North of Canterbury, forming one formation. This carries with it, of necessity, that the Canterbury Plains have been submerged since the shingle was brought down from the hills, and have been re-arranged by marine action. This view has always been upheld bj- Captain Hutton in opposition to Dr. Haast and other eminent New Zealand samns, who hare contended that the existing form of the Plains owes its origin entirely to the action of the great rivers.
