A man named Powell has been com. mifcted for trial for having written an anonymous letter to one of the directors of the Public Hall Company insinuating that the Company was being defrauded by Hillsden, the custodian. NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA. The Wakatipu has arrived from Sydney with later English and Australian news. The English news is unimportant. AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. The Bannerman testimonial fund has reached LOO. The ship Enterprise has arrived from London at Adelaide. Seven cases of small pox occurred on board. One had died, and two persons are invalided. ■ She has also whooping cough and scarlatina on board, from which ten deaths have occurred. Chejstchurch, April 11. CHRISTCHURCH RACES. SENTENCE OF DEATH. The Maori Te Paturi has been sentenced to death for the murder of Morgan. FALL IN SCRIP. Another fall has taken place in the price of scrip in the Moanatairi. Shares are now quoted at about £l2 10s.
