[from our own correspondents.] Dunedin, April 11. THE FEVER HOSPITAL. A large meeting was held last night, which carried strong resolutions urging the City Council to maintain the Fever Hospital. CAPTAIN ANDREWS REDUCED. In consequence of getting the steamer Taranaki into a dangerous position near the Shag Reef on Saturday last, Captain Andrews has been reduced to the rate of Chief Officer. Captain Griffiths, of the Beautiful Star, has been appointed commander of the Taranaki. RAILWAY RETURNS. The earnings of the Otago Railways during the year ending March last amounted to L 133,315, against L 104,000 for the previous year. waikouaTti runs. The Waste Lands Board, by three to one, decided to give the lessees of runs 39, 70, and 77 notice that tliey have no intention of releasing. A deputation from Waikouaiti urged the Board to cut up the runs into from 500 to 5000 acre farms. BAD GAS. The Mavor has declared that the cause of the bad quality of the gas supplied lately is due to the determination of the gasmakers to supply an inferior article, and thus compensate for the reduction in the price made by the City Council. POCKET-PICKING. Early this morning a suburban resident accepted the invitation of a stranger to partake of some coffee at the coffee stall. During the drinking process the stranger disappeared suddenly, and the suburban gentleman found that his pocket had been picked of a purse containing money and valuable documents. SCARLET FEVER. The Health Officer reports that scarlet fever is excessively prevalent in the city, and mentions 12 persons as being sick in one house. IN A GALE. The ship which was sighted off Oamaru yesterday proved to be the Duke of Sutherland, bound from Sydney for London. She has been compelled to run for this port owing to stress of weather. She left Sydney on March 15th, and met with a tremendous gale on the 26th, during which a heavy sea washed two seamen overboard, one of them named Frank Koockler never being seen again. Captain Louttit was washed overboard from the poop, but his coat catchiifg in the brace bumkin, his life was saved. The captain has received severe injuries to his collar bone, some of his ribs being also broken.
