■ 9 [from our own correspondents.] - SMALL POX. Sydney, March 14. The barque Sydney has been spoken off the Northern Coast, bound from Hong Kong to Otago with five passengers and ten cases of small pox on board. ARSON. A determined attempt was made yesterday morning to burn M'Cluskey's board ing-house in Moray-place, near Georgestreet. It seems that a boarder during the day threw a match on the dressingtable in his room. The flames, however, were extinguished without any particular damage resulting. But the place seemed doomed, for at 20 minutes past 2 o'clock this morning the premises were burnt to the ground. There were 20 persons resident in the building at the time of the occurrence, one of whom, Daniel Barrett, a recent lodger, was burnt to death. Dodd, the draper, estimates his loss at through the removal of goods. The cause of the fire is unknown. The building, the property of N. Williamson, was insured for £4OO in the National. M'Clusky estimates his loss at £6OO. THE DUNEDIN FIRE. [from another correspondent.] Waverley boarding-house, in which the fixe was discovered and put out yesterday
I morning, was totally destroyed this mornI ing. Daniel Barrett, one of the inmates, I aged 20, was burned to death. The house I was insured for £4OO in the New Zealand Company, but the furniture was uninsured. ' FURTHER PARTICULARS. The man's charred flesh found has bsen identified as that of Daniel Barrett, a bricklayers' laborer, who had lately arrived from Oamaru. It is believed his father is employed in the Railway Department, and that he had a chance of obtaining employment to-day. The female cook of the establishment was also injured through jumping out of a window. LEASES OF RUNS. The Waste Land Board at the meeting tc-day instructed the Chief Surveyor to subdivide the runs which are about to fall in, into 5000 acre-blocks. The Board favors ten-year leases. THE DUNEDIN RACES. It seems that he hanged himself in c-jiisequence of having lost £3O through gambling. SECOND LINE OF TRAMWAYS. Mr. Proudfoot offered to lay a second tram line through Dunedin city if Council would reduce the rent and :' ". create the tenure to fifteen years. T'l3 Council have agreed to increase the tenure to fourteen years, but not to reduce the rental. SCARLET FEVER. A child died at Milton yesterday from scarlet fever. DAVENPORTS CHALLENGED. Capt. Barry bet the Davenport Bros, at the Theatre last night, £IOO to £SO, that he would tie tliem so that they could not disengage themselves, if allowed to use his own rope. The offer was accepted. DR. SWARTZBACH. Dr. Swartzbach will visit Oamaru on Saturday, and receive eye and ear patients till Monday night. WANGANUI RACES. The Wanganui races were well attended, and proved a thorough success, the course being in good order. WANGANUI DERBY. Queen of the Vale 1 Marama ... ... ... 2 Lucifer ... ... ••■ 3 Queen of the Vale was a strong favorite, and won by three-quarters of a length. WANGANUI STAKES. Elsa 1 Perfume ... ... ... 2 Parawhenua ... ... ... 3 Opawa lost considerably through a false start. Elso won by four lengths. The Scurry Stakes were won by Mora M'Donald. RAILWAY PLATE. May Moon 1 Flora M'Donald 2 Parawhenua ... ... ... 3 Elsa, Glengarry, and Matipa were scratched. May Moon won by several lengths. The Ladies' Purse was won by Opawa. DUNEDIN AUTUMN MEETING. Some good work has been done at the Forbury to-day. Titania and Templeton did a rattling two-mile gallop, doing the second mile in 2min. 12sec, or 2sec. quicker than King Phillip and Dead Heat yesterday. Elfin King and Punga did not do quite such fast work. Hippo at last appeared on the course, doing a mile in 2min. 15sec. The course will be open to-morrow and Friday for the last time. THE CANADIAN COMMISSIONER. The Hon. Mr. ihe Can:.dir.:i Commissioner, was interviewed by the Chamber of Commerce yesterday after-
noon, in reference to opening communication between Canada and Colonies. Mr. Reeves, the Mayor, piloting Mr. Young and General Bridge, who represents very extensive comniei. cial interests in the United States, over the city, and they have already visited a number of the principal buildings. The General, it is said, will make an exhaustive, report on all that he has observed in hi» travels when he'gets back.
