ABSCONDING OF MR. C. E. HAUGHTON.
Our Special Correspondent at Dunedin telegraphs to us this afternoon that a rumor was current in town that Haughton had escaped to Newcastle in the brig Canny Scot, which sailed for that port on Saturday. He adds- that whether, there be truth in that, particular fact or not, there can be no doubt that he was not on board the Taranaki, which sailed for Wellington ; which leaves it to be surmised he does not intend answering to his bail. The Press Agency telegraphs that it is supposed that Haughton lias- absconded from his bail, the rumor being that he left Port Chalmers on board of a cutter, in order to board a vessel outside bound for Australia. Since the above was in print, we have received the following from Our Own Correspondent:— Duxedin, 3.20 p.m. Hatighton was arrested at Port Chalmers at nine o'clock last night, and brought before the Police Court to-day, charged
with trying to abscond from* the Colony while a prisoner on bail. As he had to appear in Wellington ion Thursday next, and it is impossible get there to answer to his bail, the Bench took till 3.30 to consider whether they would accept bail. . •' 4 p.m. Haughton was remanded to Wellington, to appear there.within eight days, bai 1 being refused.
