FORGING AND UTTERING .

A man named John Lewis Horn was arrested about eleven o'clock last night, charged with forging and uttering a number, of cheqiTjegsfmrporting to.-Ke drawn byMe"srs. Fleming and "Hedley. The accused. it appears, had, somo time ago, been in the employ of Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, and it is supposed, as he was paid by tlieui in cheques, he was we 1 ! acquainted with their signatures. On Saturday evening, he entered a draper's shop, and cashed a£7 lis. cheque. He then made his way down the street, and negotiated two others—one at Mr. Wlielch's for the same amount, and the other at Hood and Sheiman's for £7 10s. He gave Mr. Joseph Moss a call, bnt that gentleman's assistant noticing something very strange about the customer's beard and whiskers, refused to trade with Mr. Horn. The boy showed an immense amount of discrimination for which we give him credit. The forgery was a very clover imitation : in fact, so good was it that Mr. Hedley himself had doubts at first as to the identity of the firm's signature. The cheques forged by Horn were written on purple paper, while Messrs. Fleming and Hedley draw out theirs on red and white. This was really the great difference between the forgerits and the originals. The police are to be congratulated for the smart way in which they secured the accused, as he uttered all the cheques under a disguise. Horn will be brought before the Bench to-mor-10W morning.
