THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
The Auckland Chamber of Commei has issued a report on the San Francis mail service, which has been forwarded! Wellington for consideration. We Q tract the following sentences therefrom, i showing the opinion of the Chamber upu tliis important question : —This Chambf respectfully suggests to the Committee < the House of Representatives the advisi bility of meeting the wishes of the coi tractors, by recommending to the Hoiii the discontinuing of these services, a equitable reduction of the subsidy, an the selection of Auckland as the pro of call. In suggesting this selection, tli Chamber has not lost sight of the claii of the Bay of Islands, as being one of tl most northern ports of the Colony. Bi the increase of commerce is a chief obje which every Government hopes to attai by opening communication with diatai countries, and this can only be secured! direct lines to large centres of populatioi Very great saving would be effected intt distribution of the mails in New Zealai if the port of call be Auckland instead s the Bay of Islands, as the large expensive steamer which will be required t< run from the Bay to Aucklani and then round the East Cape, in tli face of the frequent south-easters, ti Wellington, would not be required, tit Southern mails going vul Manukau, a suggested in a former part of this report whilst a small steamer could take th Napier portion. It appears to this Chan ber the saving of a few hours' steaming i the only superiority which can be claim# for the Bay of Islands, whilst the ad vantages of Auckland are now many affl will increase. The Chamber is of opinioi that the mail service to and from Sai Francisco, Honolulu, Auckland, am Sydney, would bring a constant stream o passengers to our shores, would increas our intercourse with the Colony of Net South Wales, and tend to make the liffi "both popular and profitable.
