Dunedin, Wednesday. THE EDUCATION BOARD.
At a special meeting of the Education Board, held yesterday, Mr. Gillies' motion re the education reserves was defeated by an amendment by Mr. Davie, to the following effect : —" That the Education Board apply to the Provincial Government to take the necessary steps to legalise the Board's title to the site and playgrounds of the Albany-street School, and to the site and playgrounds of the Normal School.
COUNCILLOR. FISH AND THE MAYORALTY.
Councillor Fish asked leave at the meeting of the City Council to withdraw the motion standing in his name, affirming the desirability of the Mayor being elected by the Council, saying that, as the question aft'ecladi:he privileges of the citizens, it should be^first remitted to thein.
THE DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. The Dunedin jockey Club Committee's annual report recommends to their successors, seeing the success of the Dunedin Cup Races,, tliat the stakes for that race should be increased to £SOO. The Committee, as yet, have been unable to secure the park belonging to the Forbury Park Company : but negotiations are still pending which they trusted might be successful. The assets of the Club Avere £1,051. It must, however, be borne in mind that, in the event of the negotiations now pending with the Forbury Park Company being carried to a successful issue, considerably more than the available cash balance will be required for the new Grand Stand, &c. STEAM TO TASMANIA. A monthly steam service between New Zealand and Tasmania will be inaugurated by the Albion, Avhich is announced to leave Dunedin for Hobart Town and Melbourne, via the Bluff, on September 11th.
