Mr. George Bell, the proprietor of the "Evening Star," has received a number of letters sympathising with him in the prosecution by Dr. Moran. He calls no witnesses for the defence. Mr. Bell has been committed for trial for libel. THE MAYORALTY. The Mayoralty nomination takes place to-day. Mr. Reeves' return is regarded as certain. MR. STAFFORD. The Wellington " Argus" says Mr. Stafford has disclaimed all sympathy with the Canterbury and Otago movement re Separation. FIRES. A six-roomed cottage in Cumberlandstreet, occupied by John Meikle, expressman, was burned down last night. The furniture was insured in the Standard for LI 50. The loss is estimated at L6O. The building is valued at L 350, and insured in the National for L 225. The house was owned by Miss Edwards, of Oamaru. By a fire at Purakanui, the store occupied" by Mrs. Bradley, was destroyed. The building and fumitiu-e were insured for Ll5O. There is no accounting for the origin of either fire. THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. The two vacancies caused in the University Council by the resignation of Sir John Richardson and Dr. Menzies have been filled up by the Executive appointing the Superintendent and Mr. James Fulton in their places.
