CORRESPONDENCE.

-—-—" [We wish it to lie most distinctly understood tS»t are not responsible for the opinions expressed bj correspondents.] ■ ■♦ TO THE EDITOR OP THE EVENINO MAlt Sir, —It is currently reported through t town to-day that o\\x Mayor (Mr.-'Sump has resolved, under medical advice, >6rT< to be nominated as Mayor for the enk year. If this be true, it is time that bestir ourselves to seek for him an eligi successor, and trusting my opinion maj that of a majority of our townsmen, Itl this may not be a difficult matter. It has been contended that the Mayon should be the reward conferred upon s member of the Corporation whose condw the Council is deserving of special n nition ; but the present time is so critic it is so important to us that when a Constitution is in course of construction the government of the Colony and its H cipalities —we should have a man at thel of the Corporation who is known at fe quarters, and whose knowledge of affaiw patriotism meets with ready acceptance,! I advise a deviation from what may an to be a wholesome rule, and recommend! Mr. W. J. Steward should be solicited accept the position. He has served thetf and district well in more than one cap* He is able and, I am sure, willing to s us still, and I am confident that if 'weß him Mayor of Oamaru the citizens wills have cause to repent having placed to that important office.—l am, &c, Cm July 12th, 1576.
