MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council was held at four p.m., yesterday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Morton, Mainland, Galbraith, and Grave.
The following letter was read by the Town Clerk : " Oamarn, Otago, N. Z. " June 30, 1876. " The Town Clerk, Oamaru. "He Election of Mayor.
" Dear Sir, —We are of opinion that the clauses in the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Act, 1875, relating to the Election of Mayors, do not apply to the Town of Oamaru.
" The Council is incorporated, and the present Mayor has been elected, under the Provincial Ordinance of 1865, and the Act of last session only applies to the election of Mayors in cases where 'the present Mayor of any Borough shall, under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1867, or any Act passed subsequently thereto, cease to be Mayor by effluxion of time,' &c. . . ' That then the future Mayor shall be elected in manner hereinafter provided for.' '' The next Mayor will be elected for twelve months, and the election will be conducted as heretofore. " Yours faithfully, ' ' Julius and Balmer. On the motion of Councillor Galbraith, seconded Councillor Mainland, it was resolved —" That the nomination of Mayor for the year ending August Ist, 1877, take place on Monday, the 17th July, at 12 o'clock; aiid the nomination for Councillors and Auditors on Thursday, the 27th July, at noon." The date for the revision of the Citizens' Roll was fixed for the 12th July, at 10 a.m. The Council then adjourned.
