MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

' The ordinary fortnightly meeting 0 f Council was held. last, evening in the Conn? Chambers. Present: Councillors Mainland, Galbraith, and Sinclair. ; In the absence of his Worship the Hay® Councillor Headland occupied the chair. 1 MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed. OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read a;; approved of. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from Mr. James Gravi complying with the resolution passed at meeting of the Council on June Bth, the iron building in Thames-street.

SUBSIDY FOR HOSPITAL. A letter was read from Mr. J. Lemcn Treasurer of the Hospital, applying f or £3OO voted by the Council for a fever iranl at the Hospital. It was resolved that a cheque be drawn ( M the amount. TRANSFER OF LEASE. It was resolved that Mr. A. Young hj TS permission to transfer the lease" of section' block XCI., to James Menear.- *■ A DANGEROUS'STREET. Mr. Brownlie wrote regarding the state oi Aln-street. ■ . It was proposed by-Councillor and seconded by Councillor Mainland, flu Mr. G-. Brownlie's letter, re the state of Alj. street, be referred to the Surveyor to repoj upon. WOODEN BUILDING. Mr. James White wrote asking permit to erect a wooden building in Tees-sttta —Granted, providing it be erected 60 k from the building line. BOX DRAI&. AND RIGHT-OF-WAY. Mr. W. C. Batfdinet requested permissioi to make a box drain and right-of-way kit, his premises in Wharf-street. —Granted, siti .j'ect to the approval of the Surveyor. A SUGGESTION. A letter was received from Sub-Inspecto M'Clusky, drawing the Council's attention i the state of the footpath and street opposit the Court-house, and suggesting that tb footpath should be gravelled.—lieferred t Public Works Committee. . Mr. M'Menamin's tender was accepted.' PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPtfRTS. It was resolved that Messrs. J. K. Broi and Co. have permission to erect a verahda! but that the other portions of the report 1 considered at the next meeting of the Com cil. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. This report was ordered to stand over ti the next meeting. PUBLIC HEALTH COJOTITTEE. It was resolved to consider this Committee report at the next ordinary meeting of B Council. TOWN SURVEYOR'S REPORT. The following report was read :—■ Engineer's Office, Oamaru, 22nd June, 1816. To His Worship the Mayor and Councilloi Gentlemen, —In compliance with your £ structions, tenders have been invited fort! construction of the different works auti rised to be done in diverting the Oantf Creek, and forming Steward-street, Medw( street, and Post Office right-of-way. ; also for the formation of roadway in. G' £ street. A flat metalled crossing 'has been formed front of Mr. M'Kay's premises, corner; Severn-street and Wansbeck-street, w will answer present requirements. The steep excavations in upper Arun-stre have been properly sloped down, and stjj have been put in Arun-street at the juncfc with Tees-street. . The lower part of Severn-street will > metalled in the course of ten days or so. I would suggest that portions of the up? part of Severn-street be filled in on the W side, and afterwards metalled ; the pres* metalled roadway not being sufficiently in* for the traffic.
