ENTERTAINMENT IN AID OF THE CEMENTERY FUNDS.

A concert and dg&natic performance was given last evening.in'the Masoiiic Hall by the united Churches and the the Oaniaiii Dramatic Club, in aid of the Cemetery Trust Funds. The attendance was large, and the financial result, we hope, will realise the most sanguine anticipations of those who have for time-past been labouring to make last night's ance an unqualified success. If frequent and general applause be any indication of the satisfaction of the audience, tlienthe patrons of tlie entertainment last - evening were liiwlily gratified with the manner in which the various items in the programme were rendered. The following were, the pieces gi vell; —Glee, '' The Winds Whistle Cold solo on the piccolo; song, "In Sheltered Yale ;" quartette, " The Bonnie Woods of Craigie Lea;" song, "Better Bide a Wee"' (encored); pianoforte solo, '' Gai6tie de Cceur" (encored); glee, "Break Soft, ye Winds;" song, "The Northern Star (encored); quartette, "Home, Sweet Home" (encored); song, "Bright Star of Eye, Arise " (encored) ; glee, " Come Live With Me." An interval of ten minutes here followed, : when the well-known farce of " Slasher and Crasher" was produced by the members of the Oamaru Dramatic Club, and the manner in which this piece was placed on the boards reflects the highest credit on all concerned. Mr. K. Lumsden, as Sampson Slasher, played with undoubted ability, and all the other characters were ably sustained. A word of praise is due to the lady who undertook the part of Rosa, not only on account of her excellent acting, but also in consideration of the very artistic manner in which she favoured the audience with a couple of songs. The-great drawback with regard to amateur theatrical performances is the difficulty invariably experienced in obtaining the services of suitable ladies to play the parts allotted. The Oamaru Club are to be congratulated in having successfully overcome this drawback, and we hope soon to be able to chronicle another performance which will merit even greater recognition than the one given last evening.
