FOUND DEAD.
We regret to have to record the sudden death of Mr. J. E. Smith, bufceher, which took place yesterday, under somewhat peculiar circumstances. Mr. Smith had been engaged for some time in Oamaru ia tho business of a butcher, in a shop situate at the corner of Torridge and Thames-streets. Ho was last seen alive on Monday, but yesterday, as some person was passing the small room adjoining the shop, lie noticed deceased lying on the floor. Information was at once given to the Police, and on Sergeant Carroll arriving, he forced an entrance into the shop, and found deceased as stated above. Near hi:n lay an empty bottle of brandy. Mr. Smith had been drinking heavily for some time past, and to this cause may be attributed his awfully sudden death. Ke leaves a wife and family, the latter being all grown up, while his wife, owing to his excessive indulgence in drink, h;is not been living with him of late. An enquiry is to lie held at four o'olook this afternoon.
