[per press agency] ■ ♦ Auckland, Wednesday. DISTURBANCES IN FIJI. The steamer Llewellyn lias arrived from Levuka. Renewed disturbances have occurred among the mountaineers of Yiti Levu. In consequence of the reported restlessness of the hill tribe, Captains Olive and Carew, with a full force of about 200 armed na,tive troops, were despatched for the mountain region of Yiti Levu about two months back. They were forbidden by the mountain cMefs to continue their march into their country, and as the object of the expedition was more to keep the insurgents quiet than to provoke-hos : tilities, a considerable foroeene^in^ea^^j,

The two officers in charge were startled at .blearing thatvfclie rebels had descended on tHe;ppposii[;& side of the ranges, and laid waste"several coast villages near' the River Sangitoto, committing in their raid most frightful atrocities. No precise particulars of .the..amount of destruction done has been received, but it was reported that thirty villages had been ravaged, and in many cases the inhabitants—men, women, and children- —being massacred in a mosb in a most brutal manner, being thrown into burning houses and roasted alive. On receipt of this intelligence, Captain Olive started for Levuka as soon as possible, and conveyed the statement of the condition of affairs to the Governor. In the meantime the coast chiefs did not remain idle. They collected their forces, and marched against the mountaineers. Reenforcements have been despatched from Levuka to subdue the rebels. The other news is unimportant.
ANOTHER LARGE FIRE. A large fire occurred in Queen's-streefc at two o'clock this morning. It was discovered in a small. occupied house at the rear of a wooden block of shops at the corner of Victoria-street and Queen-street, opposite the Greyhound Hotel. The'fire spread with great rapidity, destroying the following premises in Queen's-sireet: — Cook'a furniture shop—stock insured in Norwich Union for £IOO ; Close Brothers, grocers—insurance on stock, £1,000; Payne, watchmaker ; Syms, hair-dresser ; Fijian Fruit-house, unoccupied; Welsman, chemist —stock insured for £450 ; Bennett, draper ; Furrell's music shop;— stock insured for £'4so. In Victoria-street' —Bine-post Dining-rooms—insured for £SOO. The lire was stopped by Montague's brisk building, which is damaged by the intense heat. The losses of the Insurance Coinpames, so far as yet ascertained, are : —New Zealand, £1,750 ; Victoria, £750 ; Imperial, £SO : Norwich Union, £6OO. The orgin of the fire is unknown, but it looks very suspicious.
