RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

We regret to have to record an accident which occurred to the 4.30 p.m. train from the Waitaki yesterday, whereby a brood marc, owned l>y Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, and valued at 1.10 guineas, was totally destroyed. When the train was about a mile from the Town Belt, the driver observed a man leading a horse across the line, which was safely accomplished in the iirst instance, but subsequently, this individual, from some unaccountable reason, gave the animal a violent kick, which had the effect of turning it again on to the line, and thus causing the accident. -V perceptible shock was felt right through the train, and had it not been that several trucks laden with grain were attached to the fore part, thus giving additional steadiness, the consequences would probably have been far more serious. After the frnginc struck the unfortunate animal it became totally jammed in underneath, and was dragged a distance of some thirty or forty yards, and when brought stand was perfectly surrounded by a bed of shingle. No blame is attached to the driver of the train, who sounded his danger whistle promptly, and the train was at once pulled up. The accident occurred at 5.17, and twenty minutes afterwards the train was again on its journey, and reached town at six o'clock.
