FRESH FIELDS

Don Jose To Trip Up North SURE TO COLLECT (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) TF there is one team doing the Christ^- '•* mas tour of the Manawatu and Marton circuit that will be watched with more interest than usual, it will be that controlled by Jack Pine. . He will have a useful string to go after the foreign capital with, but most interest will be centred on Don Jose. ■ This horse has shown more improvement' than anything at Riccarton during the last few months, a,nd he will surprise many if he fails to win a big handicap during the season. After unsuccessfully competing for over two seasons since he had won a race, he mv.st have given his owner , and trainer heartburn, and they deserve all they get now for having persevered so long , with him. ■■ ' At last a turn came for the better and he cantered home an easy winner m the open six at the last Ashburton Meeting. • His next effort was the Geraldine Cup, over a mile and a-quarter,. and he was expected to again run a great race, but We got -the stitch over the last hundred yards and ' was beaten into third place. He soon made amends for this defeat by making no race of the Timaru Cup and filling second place \ the secbn'd day to Ranelagh. His good. form at the recent, Cup Carnival does not need repeating, and he was unlucky not to have scored a double. At the present, time he looks as if he is fit to race for his life, and when he opens up his northern tour there will be more than one to know that 'there is a visitor from the South present.
