Northern Club Trying Out Purely Hack Meeting
"IS NOT FOR STAY-AT-HOME PUNTER
. (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Matamata is trying- out a purely hack meeting- this season, and there is no shortage of acceptors for Saturday next.
THE trouble for outside punters is to know what events some of those with double and treble engagements are intended for, and on that account it may be well for stay-at-home enthusiasts to. give the fixture a wide berth. For the opening event, the Tirau High Weight Handicap< Page Boy, a Clarenceux-Tortrix gelding,, would only need to repeat his best southern form of last season to give the stake a shake. He won three races m the ,South Island' at minor meetings. If he is not the horse he was, he will find Asmodeus and Unoco fair opposition. Asmodeus was not handled m first-class style when he missed at • Thames, recently. Welcome Boy and Valcuir are a likely pair for recommendation m the Hinuera Handicap. Both showed up at, Thames without actually being returned victorious. Rangitown, Otranto, Dainty Manners and Queenstown are a few engaged with some pace, but there are 'several other fresh hacks to . be produced with the possibility of a surprise m store. •, Coll is handily weighted for the Waharoa, m which Tuku, Abbess, Oscar, Valstreet, Parf ait Amour and Archeen are fair hacks at their best. Tuku has Takapuna winning form as an appealing recommendation. The Matamata Hack Cup is a
puzzler, though Thurniis, Moter© and Whakana have their show to make., good on the weights. Star Comet is without niuch racing while Luminary may not relish the distance. : Red Bay has' been promising to do things, but "Dick Hannbn with Tuku and King's Guard has the most solid pair engaged. Day Liass ' and The Sun will both carry money. If Motere is ever going to make good, here is his chance at the minimum. A big host of unknowns figure m the Putaruru -Stakes, though Glenlson, from Cox's Te Aroha stable will appeal on his display' out m front to finish inside the money at Thames. There is usually an upsetter m this race, which Arch Arrow and. Lady's Boy won m previous years. Previous form on the day should prove a guide for the Okoroire Handicap for almost all of them have earlier engagements. Archieval, British King, Tuku and Show Prince read well m the Railway Handicap, though White Ringlet and Abbess are two capable of setting v a merry pace m the class. British King is m the boom again since winning at Waipapakauri. . If reserved, Luminary may win i the Walton ' Hack, though Pate re, Tuku and Grand' Tea appear a likely trio to keep'him busy.
