WRACKLER'S GOLD CUP

Four -Year - Old Puts Up Great Performance At Petone (By "The Toff")

(Though entitled to /all the honors attached to the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, H. Fj Nicoll's four-year-old pacer, Wrackler, was a trifle fortunate m having his big task eased by the serious errors^committed by Dilworth and Concliff when within thirty yards of the winning post.

DILWORTH broke under pressure i after making the pace for the best! part of the journey. To set the I pace and remain m front until almost I within reach of first prize says much for the filly. When she relinquished the lead, Concliff, which had trailed her throughout the journey, made a dab and obtained possession.' • At that stage Maurice Holmes was hard at work on Wrackler.. At the crucial moment Concliff misfired and Wrackler collected the prize and the gold cup. Though the race was run m slower time than the horses were handicapped to do, the fact that Wrackler won from a 4.26 mark is abundant evidence that the son of Wrack (2.1 1/^) and Trix- Pointer i ■

(2.8) is the greatest four-year-old , New Zealand has produced. King Pointer did not act kindly m the race. He broke *at the start.-' Logan Chief was m front for a furlang and a-half, / where he was steadied. He made a good effort m the straight, but fourth was the best he could do. The big disappointment of the race was Dundas Boy. He began well and with a mile covered he occupied a good position, but broke badly. Padlock made his usual quick beginning, but at no stage of the race did he look like, catching the leaders. The sectional times were: First two furlongs, 37 3/5; mile, 2.20 1/5; mile and a-quarter, 2.51 4/5 ; mile and ahaif, 3.24 3/5. The last two, furlongs were accomplished m 31 3/5 sees.
