TROUNCED

Wanganui V Mastery

Over Taranaki

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Taranaki Rep",) Wanganui revenged June 3 to some purpose on Saturday when they overwhelmed Taranaki to the tune of twenty-eight points to nine at New Plymouth.

TT. was a clear-cut win, too, Wanganui ..scoring seven tries,, two conversions, and a penalty, while. Taranaki, secured' three tries. '

Taranaki went well 'for . twenty minutes and then . tired terribly. In

the second spell there .was. only one team m it. •'.-,.->■ !

Undoubtedly Taranaki- were palpably out of condition, but, even so, the. team played belowfor'm and next time out will perhaps, astonish their opponents. There was, of course, a call for Selector Guy to give fresh blood a chance and he will not hesitate to do so.

Ball, the speedy winger, was the hero of the match, scoring no fewer

than five tries,

Tilley. on the other wing, was • well watched by Fookes, but his boot notched 7 points, one penalty from a yard beyond half way. Bell's filled a new role at centre, and until he petered out a few minutes before time, "Moke" filled it, well. . • . . . McLennan went well at first fiveeighths, whilst Ambrose, at second fiveeighths, was both clever and elusive. Kilby, at half, showed how to open up the game. . Lockett, as rover, was m everything. He proved hard to stop and well deserved his try.

Of a great pack of forwards, Oxley,

Stewart and Byrnes were the pick.

Collins, the Taranaki full, was below form. Brown, at .centre, had just recovered from an illness and did not do himself justice. Fookes was the- pick- of the threequarters, and also Taranaki's best back. it was a sadly-disappointed public that began to leave the ground before the second spell was half over.

Taranaki plays Canterbury at Stratford on Wednesday next, and Auck-

land at New Plymouth on Saturday of next week. ••■■.'

Taranaki's defeat was quite expected m Opunake as soon as it was known that there were no Opunake* forwards selected. Tlie champion team certainly lias a great pack. '
