Oars Soon Will Be Sweeping Again

(From y N;Z. • Truth 's " ' Rowing Correspoudeht.)

WORD comes from Sydney that the. Australian rowing authorities are keen to have a visit during the coming season from a New Zealand eight. If arrangements can be made to hold the International eight-oared race m February, a New Zealand crew will no doubt compete. ■ The Mosman eight are very keen to meet another New Zealand crew and avenge the defeat Inflicted on them by Clarrie hlealey and his men a few years ago. With the experience oarsmen oh this side of the Tasman have had In eight-oared rowing during the last two or three years, it should be possible to get together a stronger. All Black crew; than ever.

If a New Zealand crew does visit Australia for an elght-.oared race, no doubt a sculler will also be sent. This Is' where, W. Turner;, of "Tauranga, will come. ln, by virtue of the fact that he is the New Zealand champion, and a good sculler, too.

The writer picked Turner last season to give A. K. Jackson a great race at Picton, and the Tauranga man did so, as he won by a few inches, after a wonderful race. Since then, Turner's admirers have presented him with a new racing skiff, and he should prove a tough. nut even for Bob Pearce to crack. ' y

• It is understood that "Gus" Jackson is also to have a new boat for the coming season. In all his races so far, Jackson- has been much under-boated, as the craft he has used was built for an. eleven-stone man, anci '<Gus" scales over 13st. y- '••■■'••

In Smooth water, the old boat was not much of a handicap, but on water such as experienced In his races with Pearce and at Picton, .it was Impossible for the big Wanganui man to do himself Justice. The next meeting of Turner and Jackson promises to be worth journeying miles to see. They are probably the. two best amateur scullers seen out m any one season • m the Dominion.
