Sports' Trust Cup

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Invercargill Rep.) The Northern District Sub-union successfully defended the Southland Amateur Sports Trust Cup for the third time this season by defeating Western District at Lumsden on Saturday. THE Sports Trust Cup is the Ranfuiiy *• Shield of the south, as the six subunions affiliated to the S.R.F.U.. are eligible, and almost as - much interest is taken m the challenge games as m the Ranfurly Shield clashes themselves. ..■■■- Eastern District (Gore and surroundings) were champions for some seasons, but lost the cup to Northern at the end of last season, and since then their forces have been strengthened, Bill Hazlett making a very welcome addition. " That big Bill has played a prominent part m the retentfon of the cup needs no elaboration here. He has led the forwards m approved style and, given them just that extra confidence which meant improving their play a hundredfold. On Saturday, eight points kept Western from putting their hands on the cup, Northern winning the final chal- » lenge by 11 to 3. It was a battle of forwards, and as Southland's countrymen are mostly of the Hazlett build, some hard, slogging play was put over.
