BRANSON HAS A RECORD
May Be Seriously Considered For The Easter Mile . •' : ; (From "N.Z. Truth's." Special Auckland Representative). There is quite a lot of talk up north regarding Branson as a hope for the Easter Mile.
SUCH a hope seems a bit rich, but it • may be interesting to . quote some of Branson's deeds to show that he is one whose prospects cannot be entirely dismissed. *" The son of "Greyspear js hardly one which could be' termed handsome, though m action he belies his looks. Nevertheless he carries weight well, but ls framed on too cumbersome lines to appeal to- those who do not know him. He is now seven years old, and was not raced m his early years.. He opened, his winning account at V iitmiiinuminiiimimmiimtiiiimmtiiimtiminiiimmniuiimiiiuiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHi
IIIIIIUIIIIIHHIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMII Taumarunui late m 1926, when he captured a hack double on the same afternoon m such fashion that he came into the boom. Later on that season he won three more and was twice m minor places, among his captures being a High Weight Mile at Rotorua and a hack six with 9.11. Last season Branson had 18 starts for five wins and three minor placings, his victories including the Gordon Mile at Ellerslie and the Thames Valley Handicap of seven furlongs. He also took the Parawai Handicap of seven furlongs, and the Foley
Memorial Handicap of ten furlongs at Avondale, when with 7.2 . he beat Star Stranger (10.1) by half a' length m 2.6. Town Bank, In the Shade, Eden Hall, and several others were m the r^ar. That seems his best performance. . This season with 7.13 he won the seven furlong Flying, at Ellerslie spring meeting with Goshawk (7.10) second, White Fang (8.7) third, and seventeen others unplaced. Then with 9.2 he was only beaten a nose by Le Choucas ln the Liverpool Mile at Ellerslie m the spring. Since the holidays he came into
iiiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiijjiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii the limelight again by winning an open sprint at Rotorua. y With big weights he ran second to the lightly-weighted The Begum at the same place, besides finishing third to the same filly when she won at Franklin. On these later performances it is contended Branson must have a show m the big Easter Mile when down considerably "m the poundage. He is said to be sprinting better than ever on the track. His chance may not be hopeless, but he still has something to do to win an Easter. ' n
