BEING the pioneer of the motoring business on the West Coast, Guido L. Schaef is now the man who controls the destinies of General Motors there. . Born at Hokitika m 1869, he became interested m things that move on wheels early m life. While a small boy he and his brother made the first velocipede ever seen on the Coast. When the "bone shaker" first made its appearance Guido obtained one (he still has it m the family archives) and he was first among those who got the small - wheeled cushiontyred bicj'cle. He was m the van with the pneumatictyred machine and when someone said "motor-car" he was all interest. ' He landed the first car on the West Coast, for In 1901 he brought the fearsome one-cylinder Peugeot to Grey r mouth. Later he swelled with pride as he sat behind the steering handle of a two-cylindar Peugeot. The story of Guido from then on has been one of steady advancement m the motor business. He is proud of the fact that his first car number was "G.M.1," and he still proudly preserves the shingle among the household treasures. . • •
