"Infernal Nuisance "
OCCASIONALLY one comes across an owner who complains that the exhaust valves of his car are an "infernal nuisance," and that they rapidly become pitted and need grinding m almost every thousand miles. This generally is not the fault of the valves at all, but may arise from a wrong mixture or bad valve adjustment. The valves should always have their full lift so as to give the exhaust gases a clear outlet, and the mixture should be set at a happy mean between richness and leanness. On very old cars the lift of the valves may become diminished because of wear on the cams themselves.
