STEAM-ROLLED
But WeK)iled Was Driver
A RARE SPECIMEN
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep..) Every town m New Zealand has had its drunken motorist, but you will not find many police courts that can produce their "drunk m charge of a steam-roller" offender., CO far &s "N.Z. Truth" is aware, the steam-roller "drunk" is a hitherto unknown specimen of the drunk-in-charge species. So, even though!- a police conviction has been entered up against the name of Thomas Henderson, of Dunedin, it is not without its distinction. In the capacity of steam-roller driver, Henderson was one of a Public Works Department gang engaged on the Great South Road at Green Island. There is nothing very cushy about the job of flattening out bumps m the road with a spluttex'ing steam-roller. Jt is more of a crush-y occupation than cushy. • ■ When a friend m . a motor-car came along the road and asked Henderson to have a drink, the roller's throttle was closed and the driver's opened., Later, when Henderson climbed back to resume his mechanical massage of the highway, his intoxication gauge showed him to have on a full head of steam.
