(From "N.Z Truth's Special Bowing Correspondent) Given fine weather the tit-bit on Saturday's Wellington Regatta programme will be the meeting of "Gus" Jackson (Wanganui) and Joe Bright (Wellington) m the provincial champ-, picn sculls. ■
Turner, of Tauranga, will show at Wellington and Picton that he is a greatly improved sculler.
DRIOR to going to Sydney to meet JT Bob Pearce, the Now Zealand champion ,was sculling remarkably well. ! Wanganui critics were very enthusiastic about "Gus.," and they had good reason to be. A man who showed that he could row a miie m 5.35 on practically dead water should hold, his own with the best m the world. In the circumstances, there was solid reason for the 'confidence expressed m the river city that Jackson would put up a good race m Sydney. How these anticipations were rudely shattered everybody knows. The rough water and having to change his sculls at the last hour had much to do with this, but Jackson's form also Went off. It was noticeable when he got back to Wanganui that he was not sculling so well as prior to leaving- for Sydney. His finish was faulty and he has not mastered the knack of getting his hands away. . They should retain the honors they now hold. However, Jackson is not a waterman, and anything m the nature of a nobble will lv-^-'biy bring about his defeat In the singles. Given good wate,- ne should, win both at Wellington and 'a- Pinton. thonsn he is not showing the form he did for a couple of w.eeks prior to going to Australia. It probably will be found that W.
