JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Handicaps and Other Things Under Review ■(From "N.Z. Truth's" North Island Eepresentative). When it became known that the handicapping was the main, feature at the recent Conference Meeting, critics were all agog.

IOWEVER, they had little information to go on, and certainly not enough on which to base statelents.;. Still, . that ever-lying jade, Dame lumor, is having; a wonderful time, lore m particular m Auckland.

The latest is that the Conference will entertain trying a system compiled toy a, prominent Auckland owner,- and this Is being barked far and wide. What truth there is m it is a matter for conjecture only, and it is unlikely

that any official statement -will be made for some time. The Conference will hold a meeting some time this month, and already invitations have been issued to representatives of various clubs. Included m the list appear the names of two members of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association.' When this is noticed and the fact recalled that the Aucklander with the system is a prominent mover for the formation of the new North Island Association and is not m the list of those invited, it gives food for thought. '* Taking that into consideration, . it is hardly likely that the N.Z. Conference would discuss a system and yet not invite the compiler. Still, like some 'of our gaited equines, the officials have funny ways, and who knows what the outcome of the meeting will be? If they deem it necessary to introduce a change into the present-day style of handicapping, is it a good move to bring club representatives into the discussion? A far better one would be to include the handicappers and several owners and trainers whose long experience with the sport would fully entitle them to voice an opinion. Rolfe Audubon is as fit as a spring Lamb and • whatever tops him off m future, will need to burn the dust. # # * At Mangore, Rockburn is getting through solid toil and doing it well, too. ** . * C. G. Lee will have a go. at Betty Moko. The Epsom "smithy" knows his onions when it comes to getting square-gaiters right.
